Silicone Based Fabric Softeners

The development of a new silicone-based fabric softener, produced by Dow Corning, offers textile manufacturers a green and safer option. The silicone emulsion is a hydrophilic organic compound with amino side groups. The amine group interacts with negatively charged fabric fibers via electrostatic forces. As a result, the silicone polymer forms a tight molecular structure and sticks to the fibers.

The new formulas of silicone-based fabric softener have polar properties, and are called super-wetters. The molecules in these substances cause the fibers to lose water more quickly and efficiently during spinning, which saves both time and energy in the dryer and on the line. The silicone-based fabric softener exhibited superior results in a test where two samples were analyzed under an electron microscope after ten washings. The silicone-based fabric softener displayed smoother surfaces, better color intensity and retained its shape even after the tenth cycle.

A fabric softener's emulsifying system is essential for effective absorption. It contains cationic and non-ionic surfactants. It is rare to use anionic surfactants in fabric softeners, which can destabilize the emulsion. In addition to the silicone-based fabric softener, it may contain other ingredients, such as fragrance, color, emulsion stabilizers, and preservatives.

A silicone-based fabric softener has excellent adhesive properties to secure to the fibers of the fabric. They also reduce the likelihood of wrinkling in the fabric. Silicone softeners also enhance the wash cycle and provide lubrication to the fibers. They can also reduce the effects of static-cling in clothing. If your clothes have static-cling problems, silicone-based fabric softeners may be right for you.

Fabric softeners have a bad reputation over recent years. While some types of fabrics are not recommended to be treated with fabric softeners, many high-quality products are designed to improve the appearance and feel of clothes and linen. Despite the bad rap, however, fabric softeners are a necessity for certain types of clothing and linen. Just like any other product, not all fabric softeners are created equal.

Fabric softeners, also known as fabric conditioners, are added to a washing machine during the rinse cycle. They deposit lubricating agents on the fabric, reduce static cling, and impart a pleasant fragrance. The invention of fabric softeners dates back to the early twentieth century and the first products were developed by the textile industry as a way to improve the feel of cotton fibers. A typical formula for fabric softeners is seven parts water and three parts soap. Some softeners contain olive oil or corn oil.
