Silicone oil is a liquid, polymerized silicone with organic dimethylsiloxide side chains attached. The main component is silicone monomer. These silicones are of great commercial interest due to their low elasticity and their ability to maintain their lubricating characteristics even after many hours of wear. Silicone has many mechanical and chemical properties that make it suitable for use in a wide range of industries.

Silicone oil is used in many of the modern machines including: heat exchangers, desiccators, pressure washers, water heaters, detergents, and industrial ovens to name just a few. It is also widely used in the automotive, industrial and dental industries for its low surface tension, excellent water repellent, lubricity, heat and cold treating properties, and flexibility. These traits make it an excellent product for a wide range of machineries.

Many of the oil types are polar and can be applied at room temperature. They have a high resistance to electrical and physical conductivity and high melting point. This property makes them the ideal candidates for use where high tensile strength and toughness are required, but at low cost. Examples of applications where silicone oils are used include: fryers, pressure cookers, food processing units, heating systems, pumps, coolants, lubricants, seals, drain reclamation systems, seals for refrigeration lines, lubricants and nearly every other manufacturing process where a good combination of mechanical, chemical and physical properties is needed. One of the key benefits of this material is that it can withstand almost all weather conditions and is therefore suitable for use where it will be exposed to varying temperatures from hot to cold.

Silicone oil itself is not an oil, it is a clear greasy liquid that has been made through the process of transestering silicone. Silicone oils are usually mixed with water, with some type of stabilizer added for purposes of lubrication. This lubricant works closely with the silicone to provide a smooth, flexible and secure surface to work upon. There are several types of silicone lubricants that are commonly used for lubricating purposes in various industries, including:

Silicone oil comes in two basic forms. There is the regular oil (which we use in our day-to-day lives) and the high temperature silicone. The regular version is readily available in hardware stores and can be used for general purposes. The high temperature version is a liquid that must be blown or injected into a job site or heated by a torch to provide a highly pliable surface that has high resistance to both heat and abrasion.

As you can see, there are a lot of potential uses for what is silicone oil. If you or someone you know needs to have their eyes tested or is having vision issues that affect their ability to see, this lubricant could help. If you are just starting out with an eye exam or your already performing eye care and have questions about what is silicone oil and how to apply it, don't be afraid to ask your optometrist about the product. Many of them have been trained in its proper use and are quite knowledgeable about its benefits. You may be able to find them offering classes or conducting research on the Internet to answer any questions you may have. Just keep in mind that the use of this lubricant should only be performed by those qualified to do so, as using it may be very damaging to your eyes.
